Surface Design

Celebration in Germany

While everyone has a culture, not everyone is able to easily access and experience that aspect of themselves and their family; therefore, I created this surface design piece in order to help those in such a predicament. Of course, since I find myself in the same boat, I first focused on my own heritage, German.

Additionally, this piece was made with the purpose of being made into a woven blanket. While still functional, the blanket also educates the owner, and effectively wraps them up in the comfort of their culture. This is a project that has great expandability and can be applied to everyone’s heritage.

Information

Inspired by Oktoberfest and the country as a whole, this surface design project depicts many historical elements and symbolism that hold great importance to German culture.

Firstly, while there are no bears in Germany, the country is home to the teddy bear, and he is playing the tuba, an instrument invented by Germans. The pig is featured due to their reputation for being a Germanic symbol of luck and her bow of her dirndl is appropriately placed on the left side on the front as to represent her single relationship status. The golden eagle, the country’s national bird, is pictured playing the accordion, yet another instrument invented by Germans. All of the animals are wearing appropriate traditional clothing as well.

The animals are having a cheerful picnic in a meadow of cornflowers, Germany’s national flower, and are filling their bellies with apples, cheeses, asparagus, and beer. Featured in the border designs are brats, both cooked and uncooked, Bavarian pretzels, and lush heads of cabbage. All of the foods and drinks illustrated are ones that Germany is known for.
